John Dies at The End by ZenandGroove John Dies at The End by ZenandGroove
Inspired by the book "John Dies at the End" which if you have not read, you are seriously doing yourself a literary dis-service.

That's incredibly accurate and awesome and beautiful and lots of other words I can't think of right now because I'm so impressed by it.

Hey there. I'm going to be writing up a review of the book John Dies at the End soon. Would it be possible for me to use this picture in it?  :)

Either way, I want to tell you that this looks amazing. You really capture the tricky blend of horror and comedy that the novel pulls of so well. Love the facial expressions, especially Molly's. And the colors are just perfect.

HEY!

Oh my gosh I am so sorry for the late response on this!  I don't check DA nearly as much as I should! Haha, but yeah!  Feel free to, thank you very much for asking permission first!  Also, thank you very much for your kind comments!  I tried really hard to get that feeling of comedy and horror that you mentioned.  So it's very appreciated!  If you don't mind, feel free to message me the review once you're done, I would love to read it!

Thank you so much! I don't check deviantart often enough either, so I understand. =P I'm really happy you're letting me use it. I could have used the cover of the book, but I felt like your art is so much better at capturing the actual feeling of the story! Thank you again! ^_^

Awesome! I'll be honest, I actually prefer the sequel to the first book. I think both are excellent, but something about the second one just sucked me in.

I finally got my hands on a copy which I will be starting as soon as I finish what I'm reading now (which is awful. Blarg!) I'm glad to see that the general consensus is that this book is everything I'm hoping it is!

Great! Hopefully you enjoy it. It's definitely a...different, read. It's one of my favorite books by far, but it involves drug use, monsters, existential crises, and dimension jumping. There's also a scene that involves a flying, flesh eating mustache. So if that at all sounds like something you're interested in, you will DEFINITELY like this book.

And don't forget the meat monster.

Yeah, I started reading it, it's so great. I need to finish it so I can start the sequel! So excited!

I absolutely love this!
(It does waaay more justice to the book than the movie does!)

I have such mixed feelings about the movie. I have such love for the book, and when they announced the movie I thought it was going to be the coolest thing. And it started out with such promise! I was even on board halfway through the movie and then it just sort of felt like it fell apart. I have this weird stance where I feel like I REALLY want to like the movie, but the changes they made, characters they cut, and plotlines removed just made it into something else. The real shame is in watching it to see the potential there for them to have made an AMAZING film but not do it.

Wow. Those are my exact feelings about it. xD
I was so disappointed. :(
Especially when they didn't have Molly or Big Jim.

SERIOUSLY. Like, I kind of understood Big Jim. I don't mean I agree with it, I just kind of understand that he was omitted in order to put more of a focus on Amy, but...

BARK LEE??

BARK LEE?!?

Yeah, exactly.
But even so, Amy wasn't even Amy, Amy in the movie was basically Jen with a prostectic hand. xD
RIGHT?
I was so pissed! Molly is a SUPER important part of the book and then just...
BARK LEE. LIKE, ARE YOU SERIOUS?

The whole Bark Lee thing also kind of completely shot the idea of doing a sequel down. I mean...I guess they could, but they'd have to change that even more so.

I love everything about this! From the 3-Arm Sally badge to the Testamints to Amy's hair (How on earth did you even do those curls?! I love it!)... it's pure awesome art for a pure awesome book.

Oh, by the way, if you drew a John Dies at the End graphic novel, I'd buy every single issue. Twice.

Thank you so much! Sorry for the incredibly delayed reply, haven't been on DA in waaaaaaaay too long. Anyway! To be honest, Amy's curls just came from looking up a LOT of reference for that kind of hair. Both photos and other illustrations(I will totally admit that I looked at Merida from Brave for an idea how to even convey that many curls in pen and ink). Looking at the way it falls and curls and just trying to make it look like it had actual flow to it. I'd honestly love to do a JDaTE graphic novel if it ever came up, haha. Though I am actually gonna be doing a follow up to this drawing soon for "This Books is Full of Spiders" sometime soon!

This is probably my favorite jdate fanart so far... it's got great characterization AND great references combined with strong composition... Most of the other fans have only one of those aspects in their tributes.

Although, I feel Dave could look more disheveled and on edge... maybe it's in his eyes.

Love how you included the Testa-mints!

Thanks!! And yeah, in retrospect I can definitely see what you mean about Dave. I probably could have taken that a bit farther and really played up just how far he'd been pushed by that point.

I literally just finished reading the book about an hour ago, and I feel like I could just start reading it again. I'm not even a big reader; I was just that impressed with it.

Anyway, I love everything about this! As was said, you've captured the characters wonderfully and I'm digging all the little references. Brilliant job!

I'm so glad you like it!!(both the drawing and the book) It's quickly become one of my favorites. Everything about that book I just freaking adore.

And thanks!! It's so cool to see people pick up all of the little details in it. Someone on Tumblr had actually tagged this with "Amy's Glasses" and "the Bible Bat" and I swear I couldn't have been any happier.
